Mint marks are able to affect the value of a wheat penny of 1944, but they are not typically rare in and of themselves. There were Philadelphia (no mint mark), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S) mints. Whereas typical copper coins of all mints are fairly common, error coins such as steel pennies are more valuable according to the mint mark and the scarcity. When determining the rarity and demand and possible market value of certain coins, collectors tend to give serious consideration to the mint marks.
